OWC Tips & Deals 8/2/2006
Intro: Hello from Woodstock! I was looking to mix things up with this newsletter, but there's just not a whole lot to touch on during July. I guess with the insane heat outside (combined with Cut-it-with-a-Knife humidity), the month had been more about just trying to keep cool. Even so, you know with only a week before Apple's World Wide Developer Conference (WWDC), I've got a least a couple bits and bytes to toss out there for you. Apple's WWDC: Intel Mac Pro, 10.5 'Leopard', run Windows apps without Windows Three years ago at the WWDC June 2003 event, the still revolutionary G5 based PowerMacs were first introduced. I'd bet that Mr. Jobs had planned to have units available at the release and it was a darn interesting couple months of drooling while the Mac world waited for the first G5s to ship that August as then promised. It also all but brought current PowerMac sales to a standstill in that interim. With this WWDC scheduled for August 2006 instead of June like the prior years, I expect the new Intel based 'Mac Pro' towers to be released and available for immediate or near-immediate delivery. The timing makes sense. Intel released and began shipping both the Xeon 5100 Series (aka Woodcrest) and Core Duo 2 (aka Conroe) processors right at the end of June. With supply of these processors solidly established, the August WWDC intro gives Apple the breathing room for a smooth and proper ramp up to meet the high demand expected for these Mac Pros. It's a point of debate in terms of which processor the Mac Pro will use, although most sensibly it will be Xeon 5100 series. Alternatively, it may be a line that starts with a Core Duo 2 on the low end but goes up to the Xeon 5160 equipped for the top end (the 3.0GHz processor model). We darn well know that Jobs has wanted to hit that 3.0GHz mark. He had actually bragged at WWDC 2003 that we'd have had 3.0GHz G5s by summer of 2004 - which Jobs faulted IBM last year for not delivering. Regardless of the whole story of why there wasn't/isn't a 3.0GHz G5 in PowerMacs, a Mac Pro at 3.0GHz is all but certain and only the Xeon 5160 can deliver that in terms of the processors Apple is open to use. The Core Duo 2 tops at 2.93GHz, and only achieves that in a special 'Extreme' CD2 version. Something else that supports the theory that the new Macs will use the new Xeon is that it will maintain line separation as well. It'd be easier to differentiate the new Mac Pro line up from, say, a low end Mac mini Intel by the processor ability. The Xeon is definitely aimed at the 'Pro' desktop user as well as server applications (new Xserves next too perhaps?), while the Core Duo line is geared towards the lower end. When I say lower end, I definitely don't mean "low end" negatively - the Core Duos are blazing fast and the Xeons go another notch up. Anyway - it's all speculation today, but something very real to talk about next week. :) In addition to what's rumored, what's official for WWDC is a preview of Apple's next generation 10.5 'Leopard' Apple operating system. 'Leopard' is expected to be shipping by the end of this year or (rather likely) released at Macworld in Jan/2007. Performance across the board is said to be improved for PowerPC and, even more significantly, for Intel Macs as that many more of the OS components will have the Intel Native code. One of the biggest rumored features, supported only on Intel Macs, concerns the ability (via processor virtualization) to straight up run Windows applications - without having Windows. Say what? BootCamp has been a free beta download since April that allows you to boot up in either Mac OS or Windows from a single machine. That's nice, but it can't be Mac and PC at the same time. Using Parallels, Intel Mac users can install any version of Windows and 'boot up' the Windows machine and run Windows apps within a window kind of like Virtual PC, but much faster since there isn't any processor emulation. Taking it one step further is 'Crossover', a soon to be released application by Codeweavers, which actually allows you to install and run PC applications under OS X without ANY WINDOWS OS installed at all! Talk about the total Windows killer! You get all the great Mac applications AND you can run Windows applications too - but under the great Mac OS + without the constant threat of a zillion new virus/worms/trojans every other day... and you don't have to line Microsoft's pocket purchasing Windows either! If Apple does that, talk about huge. And if they don't, Crossover is still there. In another week, we'll 'know it all'. Until then, the 4-part looprumors 10.5 article isn't too bad a read - even if some parts are now dated. So there's a little preview for you, plus that Crossover tidbit. We'll have a lot more to chat about next week. Also plan on a full-on detailed discussion into that latest "Run Windows apps under Mac OS" option as well. Apple's new Wireless Mighty Mouse I am of the opinion that you either love or hate Apple's original $49 wired Mighty Mouse. So, if you like the 'original' - then the new Might Mouse Wireless available for $69 is the next logical evolution you've been waiting for. This new wireless mouse from Apple works with any BlueTooth equipped Mac - although maybe not with all third party BlueTooth add-on adapters (based on comments in some reviews). Battery life with BlueTooth mice in general has typically not been great... so I agree with another reviewer who suggests using rechargeables as well. Personally - the Mighty Mouse is not quite my cup of tea. Also, I have really enjoyed my Logitech Wireless Mouse which has the traditional left/right/center button+scroll wheel (they have a plus model with more) and also goes about six months on 2 AA batteries. It's not as nifty as Bluetooth having that USB wireless dongle, but the RF (radio frequency) mice have been just like a wired mouse, in my experience, when it comes to responsiveness and tracking accuracy. To be fair, I fall in the 'hate it' column of the Mighty Mouse (or at least the 'tolerate' column) because I already like the traditional-design mouse I've got. If I was going from a one-button mouse to the Mighty Mouse, I'd be more motivated to 'train my hand' to how it works and I am sure I'd really enjoy its additional functionality. We also have several designers in-house that went from the third party 2/3 button+scroll wheel to the Mighty Mouse - and love it. It comes down to personal preference and If learning the Might Mouse offers you benefit. And if so, this Wireless option just makes the product an even better fit. New OWC 2-Channel PCI/PCI-X SATA HD Controller As you know, OWC is all about providing options and I think our new $49.95 OWC SATA controller card delivers quite nicely. This card offers excellent SATA performance at an economical price, plus the extreme convenience of allowing connectivity of up to two SATA HDs internally, externally, or even one internal and one external. By simple switch, you set each channel to operate the corresponding internal or external SATA channel port. This is the fast, reliable, and flexible way to add up to two SATA hard drives to any PowerMac G3 B&W, PowerMac G4, or PowerMac G5(excluding 'oct 2005 dual-core) system with an available PCI/PCI-X slot. It is your perfect tool for getting the full eSATA performance from one of our new Elite Pro Quad solutions. Or, build your own 2-drive eSATA solution with an OWC Elite Pro 2-Bay eSATA enclosure kit. These are just a few of the many SATA options now supported at OWC. Hot off the press today - New 160GB MacBook/MacBook Pro HD Upgrade Kits Just added tonight are new $299.00 160GB 5400RPM Internal SATA HD Upgrade Kits perfect for that MacBook or MacBook Pro. What you get is a Seagate 160GB Momentus 5400.3 SATA HD (covered with a 5yr Seagate Factory Warranty), EMC Retrospect Backup Software, and the full support of OWC. If you check out our MacBook/MacBook Pro upgrades page, you can see installation videos + full line of both 5400RPM and 7200RPM HD options and the right the memory upgrades too. Our prices are typically a good bit less to get a 100GB 7200RPM or 120GB 5400RPM SATA Internal vs. what Apple charges JUST TO UPGRADE to the same Size/Speed! And, we'll give you a trade in rebate on your old SATA HD and/or memory making the OWC options even better. Or... use one of our OWC Mercury On-The-Go SATA FireWire enclosures to make the old HD external. For Fun An Apple Logo on the new PlayStation 3? Is this a sign of a coming collaboration? Not quite... It seems the agency working for Sony that produced this fine work uses Apple's $500 Shake application - only it was in 'trial mode'. And when in trial model, it water marks your work with the Apple Logo. LOL & Ooooops! :) Microsoft continues to make more and more noise about their up and coming 'ipod killer'. This sneak peak might have current iPod owners worried and watchful. But seriously - a pretty decent article under the peak as to why MS is dreaming and the media is just giving us something to read about. Intro Closing: That's a wrap for now. I really thought there'd be more, but that's a decent bit of info for now. With WWDC, Apple Expo Paris, Apple Expo UK, and the whole holiday season now coming up - it will take more than a newsletter a month to keep things covered. I'm looking forward to that too. Thanks for reading and hey, hope you're staying cool! I also hope you'll checkout and enjoy our latest Quick Tip, the latestReader Specials, and Roger's Music on the Mac which follow these 'special messages from our 'sponsor': Quick Links A better Apple/Macintosh ISP at a better price - FasterMac.Net From $5 a month, get nationwide dial up with Toll-Free Tech Support support, anti-virus blocking, powerfully effective and fully customizable anti-spam tools, web space, 5 e-mail accounts, and more. Quick Tip: Flip4Intel Windows Media player update Kind of a quick and easy one this week and timing is everything. In a previous newsletter, a quicktip covered the use of Flip4Mac for the easy integration into Quicktime support needed for Windows Media. Although maybe not an everyday need, occassionally I get a file or hit a site where Windows Media is needed... Sites like MSNBC just don't offer Quicktime streaming. :) As of July 19th, there was no version of Flip4Mac supported for Intel. This tip was originally written with credit given to the 'non-hack' Intel workaround I found and tested from OSNews. Well - good thing I did another quick check - end of last weeek the new Intel supported version was just released. :) Flip4Mac v2.1 Intel+PCC universal is now available and whether you have a PowerPC or Intel processor based Mac - this is the seamless and free solution for your Windows Media file accessibility needs. Music on the Mac 8/02 - Get Creative, Wirelessly Greetings from www.macsales.com/music Wireless Midi is here! http://eshop.macsales.com/?mkt=1694 The clever folks at M-Audio have a new product that is quite convenient. It is called the MidAir 25. It is a "Wireless Midi" keyboard. This is basically their popular Oxygen 8 keyboard controller fitted with a midi transmitter and a separate midi receiver. It allows you to control your virtual synths and/or hardware synths from anywhere in the studio (or living room for that matter)...no USB or power cables required. This is very convenient and fairly unique. I know from my own experience that one might want to record a track from that super comfortable couch in the control room or from another room--now it's easy to do so. Another great advantage is that you can now control a whole rack full of synth/sampler hardware on a live gig with just one simple wireless keyboard...no computer required- an elegant solution for a keyboard player doing live gigs. The transmitter has a specified range of 30 feet and is class compliant...no driver downloads required! I am hoping they will equip a controller with more keys such as an Radium 49 key or 61 key controller with similar wireless capability for more "two handed" playing possibilities. Having said that, I recognize that many controllers are used to play in one handed "parts" to a recording app such as GarageBand or Logic or Ableton Live. This is a great product to use with these fun and capable applications and I am sure many users including myself will find this wireless feature very clever and handy! Closing: This time around, just don't have a much a lot to close out with. My son, now just over 13 months, is walking (ok - up to 10 steps or so at a time) for the first time and he is the joy of my life. It's so amazing to see him grow and develop - just really something. The diapers I could do without, but a small price to pay. Excited about WWDC and the Apple's future. Apple is growing faster than it's competitors and growing market share, officially, again for the first time in what must be nearly a decade if not longer. While I was not initially too excited by the switch to Intel - I've come way around and starting to really be impressed by the processors they've been cranking out. With that all said - just want to do what I can to make sure the joys life offer and those other, less important things, that still are a part of today and making it interesting - can be the primary 'concerns' so to speak. We've got it darn good in this country. Security, comforts, food, clothing, water, etc. When there are complaints to be made, rarely are they about availability of the necessities and being able to complain is a luxury, in that sense, itself. A real price is paid to protect and maintain the freedom and liberty and security we all too often take for granted. Anyway.... Always the best, stay cool, and we'll be back again in a week post WWDC! Thank you for being an OWC Tips n' Deals subcriber!
